"But I can't abide a claim jumper." Well, he has admitted to carting away 5 peanut butter jars full of some "mud"! He must have taken those peanut butter jars in with him for the purpose of gathering samples and keeping them separated for analysis. No other explanation seems possible. Do mining engineers generally leave peanut butter jars at an adit??
