Constant dollars are used for such things because if you don't, you miss the fact that things keep getting more expensive.

Great idea. Why not just restate our national debt in 1940 dollars and we should have no trouble at all in repaying it.

The failures of Operation Eagle Claw were manifold. However, most of the failures were because of a run of very bad luck. An unexpected sandstorm reduced the force to minimum levels, and the rest of the accidents made things impossible to complete.

Whatever. Excuses. The country was humiliated by Carter's failure, and I remember it very well. I also remember being elated at Perot's success.

Inflation was outpacing the increase in expenditures. By a lot. So, if you don't calculate in constant dollars, you miss that services had to be cut.

So a man comes into office, destroys the country with inflation, but we discount his 50% addition to the national debt because of that very inflation? That really doesn't seem quite right.

The bottom line is that Carter outspent Bush in terms of the 4-year deficit increase. But you conveniently ignore that fact.
