OT It has never changed since Roman times with the optimates and the populares.Same in US with Democrats and Republicans and Canada with Conservatives and Liberals.

One group reckons it is wealthier and therefore more deserving than the others and the other group either believes in some amount of social equity and responsibility or because they are poor they belong out of neccessity or self defence.

Your arguments about healthcare in Canada seem to be summer predicted from individual swallows. The whole issue must be very complicated and probably only a very few have command of all the facts.Your friends opinion was no doubt colored by the loss of his daughter and maybe he also hoped to make a buck.

My own swallows include having had open heart surgery , endovascular surgery for major aneurisms , and presently waiting for laprascopic surgery to remove cancer from bowel and liver.I could have afforded to go to the States for each of those proceedures and might have been attended to marginally quicker, but medical doctor friends(not the ones attending me)advised me against it.

I accept we can only put so much resources into medecine as a country , and am content to take my turn and chances here----way better than most parts of the world.
I also stress again that people in Canada who wish private treatment can buy it elsewhere.

As for the present discussion in the States it seems to me to be pretty selfish of wealthier groups to attempt to deny better treatment to the remainder at the equivalent cost of maybe driving a Camry instead of a BMW.

As to this being off topic I do believe investment in health is the most rewarding there is.
