Did you see the story about the guy who found 10 1933 mint condition double eagles in his grandmother's safe deposit box?

It was a NYT news service story in our local paper.

Apparently, guy read the story about King Farouk's '33 double eagle and was shocked to see that his grandfather was the dealer who sold it to the king.

Long story short, he took them to the mint for verification and they promptly told him they were real and kept them. He's hoping to work out a settlement with them along the same lines King Farouk got: the mint officially "issued" his coin and got 50% of the proceeds at auction (which was millions).

The guy has successfully shifted burden of proof to gov't. that his coins are illegal... will be interesting to see this play out.
