The inherent difference between government and private companies is that that private companies represent the shareholders and government represents the citizens.

How much have you read about Public Choice economics? Government often represents the interests of government officials and employees, or the collective interest of government power.

Private companies face competition and have to get customers to choose them. Government can just take what it wants.

Single payer has led to cheaper health care in many countries.

X and Y exist in country Z, doesn't imply that X caused Y.

Yes marketing and profit and cheaper payrolls

Government would have to market/educate people as well. The drive for profit encourages efficiency and in any case the profit of health care insurance companies moving to zero would (even assuming no negative results from the change which seems unlikely) not significantly change the overall health care cost picture. Also non-profits play a big role already. As for cheaper payrolls the average federal government employee makes more than the average private sector employee. Maybe cheaper upper management (certainly at least on a per person basis), but the top executives do not usually represent a very large part of overall compensation costs.

Also consider that our existing government insurance programs already contract out a lot of the processing, not something that suggest that private sector employees are more expensive or less efficient, or that moving more to the government would be a way to save on salaries.
