why did ACORN get 5 billion in the stimulus bill when that money could have gone to the little sick children ?

ACORN did not get 5 billion in the stimulus bill. My understanding is that the stimulus provided for 5 billion (or 8.5 billion, I'm not sure) in grants for which ACORN could compete. I think ACORN has received a little over 50 million over the past few years. Government spending on community organizers may be completely wasteful, but assuming ACORN will get 100% of it diminishes the argument. It's like the crowd count of last week's protest - it sidesteps the real issue.

About those deer - I think we're seeing evolution in action. When we first moved out to Northern Virginia, seeing deer was something of a special occasion; now it's an almost daily occurrence. 15 years ago, if there were deer in the back yard and I got up to look out the window at them, they'd take off. Now I can open the sliding doors to the deck, and they'll just stand there and continue to eat the azaleas. I have to throw something at them to get them to move.
