Actually it corresponds to the politicalization of science. The current nonsense re global warming being the latest example. It is possible to argue either side of the issue and be intellectually honest. It is impossible to say there is a consensus,or that it is proven science and be intellectually honest.

How many times do we hear groups of scientists who are really just fronts for a particular political point of view issuing statements that we are supposed to accept as true without any examination, because they are scientists.

It has reached the point where if the science involves the environment, national defense, or right to life issues, and now global warming, it is impossible to determine the truth.

Then we have the junk science that comes out of our courts. Things like the twinkie defense. If science is not respected it is because too many scientists are dishonest and/or political.
