College football. This weekend some of the top ranked teams took on some respectable football teams and guess what? Nobody looked good. USC did worse than not look good. They stank the house out. Good from my point of view, as they not only notched a loss, but a conference loss. True, they lost their quarterback for the game, but a top five team should have a backup quarterback who can run and throw. Especially against a team that lost all of its games last year. Yes, the Huskies have improved. But the Trojans have also gone downhill.
Florida did not exactly shine at home against Tennessee. The funniest part of the entire game was when that jackass, Tim T'Bone. was berating his offense to toughen up. He looked like a deranged Marine drill sergeant. On the next offensive play, T'Bone fumbled without any assistance from the Volunteers. Oh, yeah, that's tough. True, Florida ended up winning. At home. Against a weak conference opponent.
Cal beat Minnesota, but their "tough guy" persona made it a close game. Personal fouls against Gophers for no reason were the specialty of the Golden Bears team, yesterday. Cal has rarely been a tough team and they have never been such a dirty team. Those penalties made it a 14 point win, while it should have been a blowout. I'm not saying they shouldn't add some toughness to their finesse style, but a little common sense would make for a better football team.
Notre Dame barely won and will probably be ranked again. Gag me with a spoon.
Oregon beat Utah in an error filled game. Despite the fact that the Utes were ranked and Oregon was not, I don't consider it an upset. It was a hoot to hear the announcers say that Oregon's little running backs, after the cheap shot dude has been kicked off the team, couldn't punch it in the end zone or make big third down plays. Then, of course, the little guys punched it in and made big third down plays. Oregon could not punt. Or kick off. Or snap the football in the shotgun. Those seem like fairly easy skill positions to fill, but I guess not.
Texas beat a Tech team that is much weaker this year. Barely. At home.
Oklahoma whomped Vassar.
Boise State beat Fresno State and I was impressed. It wasn't a perfect performance, but Fresno State is not a bunch of joicks, either.
If this week was an indicator and not an outlier, then the BCS title game is wide open. |
