WASN'T exactly a "cancellation" of "missile defense", in Europe or anywhere else. :-)

Seems to have been a very pragmatic decision....

(Moves to quicker deployment of Aegis-based SM-3s interceptor missiles addressing both short and intermediate range threats, and then even more modern and capable land-based SM-3s shortly thereafter... while preserving the possibility of gradually adding on extra layers capable of addressing long-range threats if and when such potential long-range Iranian systems are ever developed and deployed.)

So, it seems to adequately address the actual threats, (while preserving the ability to also address other possible new threats if they ever develop in the future), and wraps the decision up in a model that is likely to be more cost/effective for the US... and also likely side-steps political problems in Europe with the old model.

If and when any new long-range threats appear on the horizon in the future, I expect that public opinion in Europe will have also evolved as well by then, because of those changing circumstances.

(And... by removing one thorn from the Russian's paw we remove the main impediment that they have signaled stands in the way of their approving tightened UN sanctions on Iran over the Iranian nuclear weapons development program. If Russia still opposes this now, they will stand exposed without the fig leaf they have previously utilized....)

So, it also may result in: greater and more effective united pressure on Iran....
