Even before I had seen that article, I was skeptical of the idea that "doing what Mayo does is the answer". Not that I would not be surprised if there are some lessons that other companies and organizations could follow that would provide some benefit in containing costs, but I don't think much for the idea that we can look for statistics suggesting X, Y, and Z contain costs the best, and then have some government effectively impose these policies on everyone else and have it work out as well as its supporters suggested. The reason why central planning doesn't tend to work, isn't just because many central planners are brutal or otherwise deficient people. Even more limited central planning conducted by very intelligent and well meaning people is to say the least potentially problematic.
