We had a similar experience when we committed my folks ashes to sea. We took my boat out to midway between Catalina and LA Harbor. The sky was overcast, the seas flat. My brother brought 5 leis for each of us siblings to throw on top of the ashes. I inched the boat forward (in order to control the direction the wind comes from. Not good idea to have the ashes blow back into the boat) and my brothers released the ashes. We then threw the leis, which formed into the 5 circles you see from the Olympics, the sky opened up a ray of sunshine on top of the leis and 2 seagulls dipped down and briefly hovered (probably just checking out the leis). We were all saying "Look, Look, Look at that". All of us ended in tears.
