Yes, and yet I sense there IS something to the view that leaders come forth to fit their times. Carter was the man who personified "malaise". Reagan was elected just in time when we were ready for a reminder about the "City on the Hill". Bubba was the perfect match for the bubble. Dubya was capable of understanding the importance of turning back the tide of Islamic extremism. During big "corrections" and unravelings of credit bubbles, for some reason we prefer statists, like Roosevelt and Obama.
