Good question. I'm not sure, but I think he does things like that because he is a journalist first, and feels a deep-seated need to give "both sides" of every story, even though in this case, the "other side" gets more and more absurd every day. But journalists are trained to believe that there are at least two sides and they must be heard.

However, it isn't clear to me why he didn't look very clearly at what the people who say that there has been a "cooling trend" since 1998 mean by that. Aside from the fact that 10 years isn't a very long time and 1998 is still the hottest year on record (which the "cool" people say, to some extent correctly, was due to a strong El Nino event that year), as Romm points out, temperature has "stabilized" at record levels.

But nevermind--Romm's piece was very, very strong. I really appreciate his blog.
