I cannot believe in the year 2009 we are even having this discussion regarding the merits of education and science. As you know, in China, and Asia in general, they are not having this discussion. They are educating their kids like crazy. In the Jewish and Asian culures they do not even consider this question of the value of education, it is a given one has to develop their minds with a robust education. We cannot compete with Asia if we do not educate our kids. We should be putting hundreds of billions into education and doing everything we can to educate our entire population as far as we can get each person to go. If they want to be a plumber, carpenter or farmer afterwards fine. But first get A BA, masters or PHD degree! Those years are involved in vigorous intellectual activity refining logic and collecting facts and ideas from the greatest minds of every culture. 95% of the population can get a PHD degree with hard work. And yes even a PHD degree in English, will make you an even better plumber, carpenter or farmer.
