I think your observations might be correct he is having a breakdown. Notice how he clings to bible passages like a squirrel would do to a nut or a drowning dog might cling to a plank of wood as it went over the falls. Like a boxer in the last round with no energy left for a feeble jab he does not even have a fig leaf to protect him. He knows that once his precious cover is gone he will be like Pastor Ted and be driven to the worst depravities and fears being found out for the phony baloney he really is.
