Well, and Bush didn't run as an anti-Al Qaeda warrior... and Carter didn't run on a "malaise" ticket. Obama may not have run openly as a a statist, but that's where his political instincts are. I don't think this was so hard to guess. He and his supporters are not letting a good crisis go to waste.
