Sept. 23 (Bloomberg) -- Orocobre Ltd., an Australian mineral exploration company, plans to start lithium and potash production in Argentina by 2011, the government said.

Orocobre will spend more than 400 million pesos ($104 million) to mine lithium from salt flats in Argentina’s northwest Jujuy province, the South American country’s Mining Secretariat said today in an e-mailed statement.

The Olaroz deposit may produce 35,000 metric tons a year starting in 2011, unidentified Orocobre executives told Argentina’s Mining Secretary Jorge Mayoral in a meeting in Buenos Aires today, the secretariat said.

Brisbane, Australia-based Orocobre will compete with Philadelphia-based FMC Corp. and Chile’s Sociedad Quimica y Minera de Chile SA to supply lithium carbonate used in batteries to power electrical appliances.
