If you mean 'generating most profit now' by 'how well', then I agree. Novell may be making more from Novell sales than MSFT from NT sales.

If you mean 'most valuable franchise' then I disagree. Selling an upgrade from 3.2 to 4.1 is clearly profitable. Suppose however that 90% of the Novell base upgrade each year, but the other 10% defect to NT. Also suppose that any new networkers go with NT and the market is growing at a reasonable but not stellar pace. The total sales for Novell would swamp NT to begin with, but the fact would be that the Novell franchise is slowly dying and the more valuable product would be NT.

I believe that that is what is happening. I work for a software company that sells a product compatible with both Novell and NT. Our VARs are moving out of the Novell business faster than we can really support. Novell will be around for a long time (and may be profitable for most of it), but I would rather own MSFT than Novell.
