With climate science there was a strong hunch that the trends were being influenced by human activity, but there was a huge reluctance to say anything until there was near scientific certainty.

The reason that the science was not thrust into the public policy sphere was that the scientists knew it would be a circus and they did not want to rush into that sort of mess. As it turns out they were right on both counts -- climate change is impacted by human actions and telling the world about this laborious and careful long-term research area has turned it into a bizarro circus. If there had been a rush to judgement 20 years ago I would have been critical and skeptical. Now I am simply annoyed, not with the science but with the predictable circus like atmosphere around the findings. And it should be no surprise who is standing in the center of the ring of the circus -- it is the Beck and Hannity's of the world, stoking the anti-science ignorencia of America. The way they do it is by finding people who will say things that for 3 seconds sound like plausible reasons for scepticism -- and then hitting on all the familiar anti-liberal, anti-govermnent, anti-everything diatribes that keep their listeners enthralled.
