How would you define high tech?

Something that can't be made from commoditized components or created using standard practices. I consider very little hardware or software to be high tech these days.

That said, "high tech" is at least 40 years old now and carries a legacy meaning. Kind of like "modernism", which doesn't actually mean "like, right now-ism".

Which brings around another definition: if it's familiar enough to already have legacy memes around it, it ain't high tech anymore, it's just mainstream. Twenty years from now, the next GM-like bailouts will be coming for the ranks of companies now tagged as "high tech"
