>>Can't resist Apple OS toys, at their best, no matter who manufactures them. I mean, the genuine, certified, kissed by Steve Macs are made and assembled in China, like every other hackintosh. No?<<

Sure. But they are designed right here in California. And in my opinion, the current crop of notebooks from Apple are the best designed computers anyone has ever made.

That doesn't mean they are perfect for everyone.

The fact is that my girlfriend and I are considering picking up a couple of Dell Mini-9s and hackintoshing them for our twins. We don't want to spend a thousand bucks each for MacBooks for kids who are 8 years old. On the other hand, the last thing we would want to do is saddle them with computers running Windows.

That doesn't mean I believe Apple should try to compete in the low-end netbook market. I think their decision to stay out of it is perfectly reasonable.

PS: Despite having a non-swappable battery, the current MBPs are much, much easier to disassemble than previous generations were. Hence the user-replaceable hard drive.
