There was nothing in my dad's will to indicate what should be done after my mom died so I had to broach the subject with him. He was clearly uncomfortable with talking about it so I made some suggestions, such as burial at the same cemetery where my brother was and he shook his head no. And after a long silence he said - Do what you did with Barry (my BIL, who was cremated).

I replied that there was now the question as to what to do with the ashes - the garden she loved? a spot at the cemetery with a plaque? He quickly said he didn't think there should be plaques or memorializing of a spot. So I suggested the sea - he used to go sailing with me. He nodded - "yes, do that - same for me."

Excruciating conversation.
