Well, I believe that 56flex is a better technological solution and the x2 temporary success is due only to the previous fame of USR and the early marketing.
Things are changing now. Very big players are getting into the Internet. It is becoming a utility. COMS has a smart CEO, but as a company they are being elbowed aside from the big money. They will survive, but won't be so glorious next year. Same with USR and its modem.
Lucent, NT, the Baby Bells, AT&T, and somewhat Sprint will be the new owners of the Internet. We shall see AOL being gradually pushed aside. WCOM will collapse: they are just a hot air baloon and the MCIC deal will show it: too much for them to swallow. No cash.
So far the Baby bells and AT&T were simply lazy, waiting to see how the Internet will sell. Hence the success of AOL, UUNET and similar.
My conclusion: Lucent and the 56flex tecnology behind it will prevail, and everybody related to it will make very good money. This will open the door to the next technology level. ZOOM is in the right camp. They have the awards. Next year people will be buying their modems like crazy. 56flex will stay here for long,. All other solutions (connections to the Internet) are too expensive for the general public. The connection for the next 3 years at least will be 56Kflex.
This, of course, is my personal opinion. As they say: any forthlooking statement...should be taken with care.
