"These ivory tower "intellectuals" never cease to amaze me with their pipe dreams."

Sometimes I get all negative like you. When I do, I remind myself of the trajectory of MAD. For a while there, it was almost certain the world would end in a nuclear holocaust, either by accident or just through bad, paranoid, fearful leadership.

We and the Soviets had had built a massive arsenal of deliverable nuclear weapons, 80,000 giant warheads between us, enough for several on every of each of our major cities and military installations, even enough for good size smaller towns. And these were big, dirty nukes, orders of magnitude larger than the Hiroshima bomb. It would have been the end of the human world.

But, a bunch of "ivory tower intellectuals" along with men of good will from both parties worked the problem tirelessly for decades. Today, we have less than 8000 nukes between ourselves and Russia. Obama is working to bring that down to zero.
