Agree, I use the same set up (outdoor heavy duty propane burner with cast iron skillet). If you blacken properly, the smoke should be dense enough to set off a decent fire detector. I like my local Fire Dept, but not enough to invite 'em all over for dinner!<G>

You've gotta be a bit careful with your cast iron though, I've gotten the pan hot enough to actually flake off the seasoning!
Of course you can always reseason, but it's a bit of a pain in the arse......
