He taught them how do anything on a car

Not too many years ago, I had reason to go to a diesel repair shop because I was having problems with my boat's engine. The guy who owns the shop teaches diesel mechanics at USC. It was a slow day so he taught me how to take a diesel engine apart and put it back together.

He had a diesel engine in pieces so he could teach his students every part of the engine, explain how it all works, how to identify a problem and how to fix it. He spent 6 hours with me and I was able to put all the pieces together and identify problems. Not a big deal because diesels are fairly simple.

The 10-YO kid who lived across the street got a Model-T for Christmas once. It sat in the garage and his dad would teach him how to "fix" things in the engine. We played "mechanics" with that car. We were allowed to start it up but that was all.
