Glenn Beck is gettin a little bit preachy for me lately.
I do think we need to remember that this is a secular nation with judeo-christian values. And not a "Christian Nation".
Religion really doesn't belong in schools. Do I think that Silent Night should be sung at the schools? No, I don't. Here's why....my son goes to a school that has a predominantly jewish population. Should those kids be put in a position where they should have to sing a song about Jesus? Or, should my son be put in a position where he has to sing a Jewish religious song?
As it is right now, all of the kids end up singing christian, jewish, and kwanza songs. YES! my son sings songs about some pseudo secular religion that is based on black culture. I'm more than happy for my son to learn about God on Sunday mornings at church and completely give up the opportunity to learn jewish, and kwaza songs at school.
And why the hell should the jewish kids who are the clear majority at the school have to sing about Jesus or whatever the Kwanza thingie is?
Apparently they aren't singing any muslim songs...yet. but why not? why don't the scientologists get their fair share too? Buddhists?
Basically, I still believe that public schools should be secular.
But then again, I am planning on sending my son to a catholic school next year.
And I believe we should focus on the values that are important to americans rather than the specific religious beliefs. I can name a few Jews who I think would be a good POTUS. The important thing is the values, not the religion. |
