"Name one major issue in the last century in the US, where the conservatives were on the right side and the liberals on the wrong side.

One issue. No one has ever met that challenge.

So of course, if the left is consistently correct and the right is consistently wrong, well of course I like the left better.

The flaw in that challenge is typical partisan bias. Any innovation, change for the better, or renewal that involves greater freedoms and liberation from oppressive or obsolete systems could accurately be labeled as liberalization, not always championed by the left wing. Any protection to valued institutions and important systems could accurately be labeled conservative and not always championed by the right wing. There is always an argument about who gets credit and some revisionism about the wellnesses or regrets of our culture.

There is great discombobulation and hypocrisy between and among those calling themselves leftwing and right wing, often switching their positions on issues depending on which party has power over those issues. At this time the left wing is more likely to support environmental protections which is a conservative agenda often resisted by the right wing. The right wing is more likely to support efforts to liberate people from brutal and oppressive regimes, which is a liberal agenda. I could go on and on with these political ironies and paradoxes but in addition neither side of the political perspective is clean and clear of corruption. The criticisms and accomplishments of the republicans are equally balanced with the democrats. The democrats are not liberal thinkers they are more ideologically dogmatic and oppressive than any group. The republicans are not fundamentally sound on moral grounds they are more likely to cover for corrupt capitalism and corporate greed than any other group.

Healthy individuals conserve those characteristics that are healthy and valuable and give liberal thought to find solutions to archaic problems, new circumstances, and stagnated institutions. Only from the group think perspective of partisan extremes does that statement not make sense for society as a whole.
