I think Friedman's dead but Krugman and Delong both endorsed Obama, so maybe THEY figured Obama was the BEST choice to increase "productivity"?

That's entirely irrelevant to the conversation we where having. If Obama is the greatest gift to humanity in all of history that doesn't imply that policies to "preserve jobs" are generally a good thing, or that producing more with less is a bad thing.

Turning to the new topic you brought up, I selected Krugman and Delong not because I think they are some incredible fonts of wisdom (although I do find some useful and interesting statements in some of Delong's statements and some of Krugman's older writings), but because they made true relevant and well worded statements that were relevant to the conversation we where having, and because they where liberals (not that them being liberal implies that liberals must or even should agree with everything they say or even most of it).

But lets pretend for the moment that I did consider among the people I respect and agree with most, or alternatively that Friedman was still alive and had endorsed Obama (not that the fact that Delong, a liberal Democrat fan of his supported Obama suggests that Friedman was likely to do so, I'd say he would have been very unlikely to do so, I don't think he was in the habit of formally endorsing politicians and also his ideas are very different than Obama's) - If that had happened then it would have been enough for me to have given Obama a 2nd look, but that's all. Arguments from authority are pretty weak, even if one respects the authority, and this is esp. true on political questions.
