My procedure is called the Epley Maneuver. It's a bit more complex than what you describe, but seems to work very well.

The loose particles are calcium carbonate crystals on the end of the little hairs in your inner ear. Sometimes they fall off and start giving your brain erroneous signals that it can't reconcile with what the rest of your balance system is telling it.
