Dan - as you might expect, MRVC declined on this press release:

( BW)(MRV-COMMUNICATIONS)(MRVC) MRV Communications announces Gigabit
Ethernet technology; new technology implementation enables enhanced
capability over Gigabit Ethernet networks

Business Editors & High-Tech Writers

CHATSWORTH, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 5, 1996--MRV
Communications Inc. (NASDAQ:MRVC), a leading Local Area Network
(LAN) Switching and Fiber Optic Transmission manufacturer, Thursday
announced details for its deterministic approach for Gigabit
Ethernet implementation.

MRV's approach to Gigabit Ethernet has the potential to overcome
distance limitations as well as overall throughput and time delays,
with no additional cost to the users. Under its NBase Brand name,
MRV Communications will offer an upgraded version of the standard
algorithm of CSMA/CD allowing improved utilization and more than
doubling the physical span of the network.

Residing in a Gigabit Ethernet hub (repeater), the core of this
technology simulates the collision of two frames prior to its
occurrence, enabling one of the frames to be saved. The hub
broadcasts the saved frame to its destination and discards
frames that collide with it, significantly increasing throughput.

Gigabit Ethernet, which can move data at a speed of 1 billion
bits per second, is an emerging standard for 1000 Mbps Ethernet,
backward compatible with current Ethernet and Fast Ethernet
standards. With Gigabit Ethernet uplink capability for MRV's
MegaSwitch II, users will benefit from high-speed switching
capability between 10Mbps, 100Mbps and 1000Mbps Ethernet.

The company expects to demonstrate this "Gigabit" Ethernet
capability at the upcoming Networld+InterOp trade show in Atlanta,
Sept. 18-20, 1996.

The company is currently shipping MegaSwitch II, a new
auto-configuring Ethernet/Fast Ethernet switch, with planned ATM and
Gigabit Ethernet uplink modules expected to be commercially
available in the fourth quarter of 1996.

Noam Lotan, president and chief executive officer commented:
"MRV is fully committed to maintaining full adherence to the
standard. Our products are updated to comply with IEEE standards as
they emerge and our Gigabit Ethernet are no exception."

To promote the implementation of Gigabit Ethernet, the Gigabit
Ethernet Alliance ("GEA") was formed in May 1996. The company is a
contributing member of this multi-vendor effort which now consists
of more than 60 leading networking and computer companies committed
to providing customers with cost-effective and interoperable Gigabit
Ethernet solutions.

With manufacturing and design centers on two continents, MRV
Communications is a leading manufacturer of LAN connectivity
solutions and digital and linear fiber optic transmission products
for computer networks, telephony and cable TV communications.
