<Forgiveness in the human sense is a choice and a virtuous goal but one that has essential constructs associated with it. 1) The perpetrator recognizes the wrong they've committed. 2) They have genuine remorse about it. 3) They are committed to taking the right course of action going forward. Forgiveness then can be a path to resolution and reconciliation.> Actually my take is that forgiveness as actually for the self... harbouring ill will or even thoughts about the issue over time is self destructive... regardless of whether the perpetrator knows anything about what he's/she's done. God, of course, ISNT PERSONAL ABOUT IT... god's prevailing energy of love is NOT concordant with il will, or other lower emotional states. As for the perpetrator, of course if they recognize mistakes and change their state of being, it's better for them. The use they make of god's love is dependant on what you're saying sure, but it's there none the less. I will say that to some extent, "remorse" is a slippery slope, it implies a negative emotional state and over the long term isn't much better than had the 'wrong' not even been recognized. Short term sure... natural. Very slippery when one is measuring 'good and bad' vs some outside mental construct... ie. what the priest says, or inaccurate ideas about the bible... because THEN often the person THINKS they should feel remorse or guilt based on what someone else says rather than their own body. Long term "Guilt" is one of the very destructive and major misunderstandings in Christian theology iMHO. <I can't get over some young Christian woman running up the hill where a memorial was being constructed for the dead and injured students. She was making a big spectacle about how she was forgiving Kleobold and Harris (the murdering nutcases). There were people there who were suffering from tragic loss that could not be resolved in such a matter. I saw it as selfish attention seeking behavior.> The fact that she even showed up probably shows you're right. OTOH, everyone deals with these things however they can. Who knows if she's exhibiting a 'better' state than some who will be mired in long term disraught. DAK
