The issue isn't the loss to society. Society isn't getting compensated. If someone is disabled they are compensated, if they are killed their family is compensated. The value to the individual or to the family is what is lost and what is being compensated for. Well the estimated economic value, and sometimes some other forms of value. Emotional value is too subjective and would open up a huge can of worms

X - "I should get 20x as much as other people because I really really loved Y", and such.
