That's not the same as standard of living. That's also a short trendline. How level something is is a function of the length of the level.

Jeez Lane are you being intentional obtuse by editing the sentence? You usually 'play fair'. The whole sentence:

Adjusted for inflation, median household income in 2008 fell to $50,303, which was 4% below its 2000 level and continued a downward trend that had been accelerating for some time.

As to the standard of living argument it's really fuzzy. Yes a family could buy a 38" flat screen TV for MUCH less in 2008 than in 2000. But if their cable bill goes up 50% over the same time frame and their real wages go down 4%, there is going to be a standard of living trade off. Maybe they go to the movies once a month instead of once a week.
