Sept job data a sign recovery a long road, SummersFont size: A | A | A12:38 PM ET 10/2/09 | Marketwatch
WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) -- The disappointing September job report is a sign that the economy recovery is going to be a "long road," said top White House economic advisor Lawrence Summers on Friday. As a result, the Obama administration will continue to support investment in public projects, Summers said. There is still more stimulus in train from the recovery package passed earlier this year, Summers said. While there is a clear trend of fewer job losses since early this year, Summers said he didn't expect job growth to return for several months. The economy has to get going before jobs will return, Summers said at a forum sponsored by the Atlantic Magazine. Growth should be positive in the third quarter, Summers said. Labor market data is a lagging indicator, he noted.
