"an almost universal teaching among these groups is that god is a sadist, which is completely contrary to the bible teaching." I guess you don't abide by the Old Testament much. One of the most popular stories of the bible is Noah's Ark, which despite its appeal to children, is the tale of a vengeful god who wipes out every living thing on land, except Noah and the ark of animals. Sodom and Gomorrah was a similar tale. Not exactly loving and forgiving. I'd agree that greed and selfishness are largely to blame for human destruction. All religious texts, not just the bible, have been twisted to suit the needs of those who seek to destroy others in the name of religion. .
