We had an experience of having a cat appearing at our bay home when we were down weekends. We let him in and every weekend when he saw our van arrive, he would beat us to the front door and want in. We decided he had to have a name for us and we decided to name him "Part Time" which we thought fitting.

The weather was to get bad, so asked a neighbor who owned him and told they divorced, Mother took kids, left Father with all the animals and he wasn't home much and she had also been feeding our cat. Told her we were going to take him home and if she saw Father tell him we had his cat and if he wanted it back to call me, left my number. Never heard a word so Part Time was taken to a Vet who said he was about two years old. Remained with our family for almost twenty years, the oldest any of our cats has survived. For a cat that is almost like being a permanent fixture in a home.

He was like our guard cat from then on. He would not allow any dogs to enter our yard and also taught our other cats they were not allowed to go down the driveways to the street. Never lost one to traffic, so also believe cats have memories of what they are taught.

When he became old, arthritis and kidney problems plagued him so I moved him inside to my office and put a light blanket down with a heating pad under and he seemed comfortable for a number of months. The he had a hard time getting to his food and water bowl, as well litter box which he was faithful to. Took him back to Vet who said it was time to put him down. I think I realized that but didn't want to accept it. We buried him behind our garage in a little cemetery we made and put a cross for his headstone. A terrible time for my kids who grew up with him and a sad experience for me.
