Yes, we ARE in a Republic, which the 2000 election helped to remind us. Gore got the most votes but Bush got the most "electoral" votes so Bush won.

Theoretically, a candidate for President could win 70% of the popular votes and still LOSE an election.

The Russians were in a COMPLETELY different situation than we were. Their banks didn't have debt obligations of 50 trillion like ours did.

Also, the Russians are basically a "resource based" economy. They have MASSIVE oil, natural gas and precious metals deposits with very little concern about that silly environmental stuff.
