To get a true sense of what Pol Pot did, from the perspective of a Cambodian citizen who lived through it, I highly recommend this book

It is not for the faint of heart. Haing Ngor starred in the Killing Fields, but complained the movie was far too mild in its treatment of the atrocities that occurred.

He later came to accept that American audiences could not stomach a movie that truly depicted all that happened. So for most Americans to see the movie to understand some of what happened there, the movie had to considerably tone down what Ngor wrote about.
