In a recent HDTV conference, John Taylor of Zenith is quoted as stating that HDTV and SDTV will "allow set makers to double revenue" and provide them with "an opportunity to get out of the pricing rate race". Gary Shapiro of CEMA predicted that "set makers won't be able to build DTV sets as quickly as consumers want to buy them, at least at first. I guarantee that."

If I was running Zenith, I'd have established partnership arrangements with DSB companies like Echostar and a number of cable systems with the objective of delivering to the American public next years Winter Olympics in full HDTV splendor, pulling out all the stops to be the first CE company to deliver HDTV sets.

What has Zenith been doing? Mucking around with the NCTV for one. What a waste of company resources when Zenith should be developing the industries finest chips and picture tubes essential to bring HDTV to market. The Japanese appear miles ahead of Zenith in terms of HDTV chip (Mitsubishi) and tube development (Pioneer's 50" plasma tube).

Hope the new CEO gets it right. No more excuses and a helluva lot more HDTV action/leadership, please.....
