I would like to disagree that US needs t o stay in Afghanistan to have the "US Empire" survive.

All empires have ended so far.

The British Empire survived the loss of the United States.
The costs of WWI, WWII ended it, but you might argue the loss of India did.

France's empire survived multiple losses, but WWII was their real Waterloo.

The various Chinese empires survived defeat in Viet Nam, and I believe Burma. Internal problems - corruption, warlordism, etc. ended most of their dynasties. A split along North / South line end at least one, maybe more. Statistically, there are about 8 to 12 good samples in China's history.

The Roman Empire survived numerous losses on the Frontier. It was splitting into East and West that started to bring down the curtain. That and internal corruption/decadence/ lead piped etc.

The Russian Empire fell apart with the defeat in Afghanistan, but the collapse in oil prices and internal problems may have been the main reason. That fits your prediction very well.
