Rare black-footed ferret reintroduced to Saskatchewan

October 2, 2009

REGINA - More than 70 years after vanishing from the Canadian Prairies, the black-footed ferret is once again scampering in the wild at Saskatchewan's Grasslands National Park.

One of North America's rarest mammals, the ferret - a buff-coloured weasel with distinctive raccoon-like masked eyes, dark-coloured cheeks and feet - was an integral park of the Prairie landscape before disappearing around 1937.

On Friday, the ferret made its Canadian comeback. Parks Canada released 34 of these rare species into their prime habitat - black-tailed prairie-dog colonies - in the park and in neighbouring ranchland. More animals will be released next year and again in 2011.

``It is really big news in the conservation world, because it is not every day that an animal comes back from almost extinction and gets reintroduced into the country,'' said Parks Canada's superintendent of South Saskatchewan, Katherine Patterson.
