Datek apparently did the best of the on line brokers. I'm a very unhappy Schwab customer, and I plan to open a Datek account. Having the computer power to handle high volume isn't that hard to do, it mostly just means spending money. Note that the NYSE computer system handled volume many orders of magnitude above any broker with no problem. The fact is that companies like Schwab knew that big volume was likely., and that it would crash their systems. They just didn't give a damn. After all, it was the customers that got the losses.
One of the ways to handle unusual volume in a computer system is to shut off some less critical functions like quotes so as to allow for trades. I just hope Datec seizes this opportunity to efurther iincrease their capacity.
