At a panel discussion on the topic 'Semiconductor Manufacturing in Europe', it became obvious that at least the Dresden semiconductor cluster is firing again on all cylinders. Infineon, for instance, reports almost full utilization. "In the first quarter, Infineon's business had declined drastically," said Reinhard Ploss, head of operations for the chip manufacturer which runs a fab in Dresden. But now the demand has risen faster than expected. "Today we have full utilization in our Dresden plant; the majority of our facilities is absolutely fully utilized", Ploss said. The company has seen very strong demand in its wireless business; solely the automotive segment is still going slow.

Globalfoundries, another major manufacturer in the Dresden area, also sees a positive future. "We have every reason to be optimistic," said Jens Drews, director government relations for Globalfoundries at the same opportunities.
