One of the key elements to increasing household consumption is storage: walk-in closets, 3-car garages, basements, attics, personal storage units, etc. That's how the Americans became such world-class consumers. Besides slashing overcapacity in heavy industry, perhaps the Chinese officialdom should take steps to promote household storage...
