I don't think that not knowing or not caring is the reason. Very many well informed and highly intelligent people tend to mistrust the chaos, the noise, the feeling of instability and the inequality of outcomes associated with individuals making their own decisions freely - and living with the consequences.

Individualism is more efficient and works better -- and collectivist, statist ways lead to stagnation and ultimately to loss of liberty. However, it's human nature to keep forgetting, and to hope that this time will be different. It never is.
