I don't think that not knowing or not caring is the reason. Very many well informed and highly intelligent people tend to mistrust the chaos, the noise, the feeling of instability and the inequality of outcomes associated with individuals making their own decisions freely - and living with the consequences.

True, but I know of a lot of people who are deeply committed to one ideology or the other and yet are totally oblivious to what is going on. To some extent it has to do with one's life experience, I suppose.

My dad was self employed his entire life and it never occurred to me -- or any of my siblings, to be anything other than that; last time I worked for a paycheck I was like 23. It is shocking to me to see so many Americans persuaded away from individualism. Just strange to me.
