My dad was self employed his entire life and it never occurred to me...

I, too, am a product of my experience. My parents worked in low level jobs for hourly wages. It never once occurred to me to be self employed. It did occur to me to get a good education, get a salary rather than wages, and move into management. But I would no sooner have established a business than move to Mars. Totally alien concept.

It is shocking to me to see so many Americans persuaded away from individualism.

I don't see it as a function of individualism. I am very individualistic and self-contained and I so operated within the construct of a salaried position with a sturdy employer. I think your point about "one's life experience" is the salient factor, not individualism.
