It really has been beautiful in the last few weeks....Your thoughts made me look to see what is going on this weekend here in the Seattle area...

It doesn't get much better. Our nomination for "prettiest week of the year" in Western Washington goes to this one, for the blue skies (most of the time), goosebump temperatures and autumn color. Get out of the house if you can. Walk in the park. Be thankful you have eyes and lungs. Some other diversions, if you need any:

Tastes of the season: Something about that nip in the air that makes you hungry. This weekend offers a full table. To the west in Port Angeles, the Dungeness Crab and Seafood Festival (drawn butter, anyone?) celebrates tasty morsels straight from the Strait. Down south, the Orting Pumpkin Fest offers everything from pumpkin sloppy joes to pumpkin pizza (neither of which we would have thought to be improved by adding pumpkin, but what do we know?). Or head north to the Skagit Valley to Sample the Apple and Pear Harvest, a day to pick and taste fruits fresh off the tree — along with sampling sweet cider — at the WSU Research and Extension Center.
Keep celebrating Oktober: If you prefer Oktoberfest now rather than September, you still have a chance to hoist a few this weekend, at Enumclaw Oktoberfest, Bavarian Oktoberfest (in Whatcom County), Oktoberfest Northwest (in Puyallup) or, in the oompah capital of the Northwest, Leavenworth Oktoberfest.
Nice car, Sven: It's simple and sweet. Go inspect some of the vintage Volvos and Saabs that will rally Saturday at Shilshole Bay Marina's Leif Erikson statue in honor of Leif Erikson Day.
Learn about leaves: Find out why they change color, then create leaf rubbings and create your own tie-dye T-shirt in honor of the season. It's all at the Autumn Splendor Super Saturday event at Seward Park.
You and your hobbies: For the special interest side of your personality, there's the Seattle Airline Collectibles Show (what were peanuts served in aboard United Airlines in 1964?). Or you might want to visit with the 50+ authors at Bellevue's Romance Book Fair on Saturday.
The artistic side: See glass birds and how they're made at the Museum of Glass Bird Lovers' Weekend, or join the West Seattle Art Walk, the Belltown Artwalk or the Port Townsend Artist Studio Tour. |
