You make some very good points.

Yep at the time, considering the situation in that region, it was my opinion Iraq was strategically a better bet than Iran because of it's geographical juxtaposition to Syria, Israel, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Iran -- and proximity to European logistic assets. I still feel that is the case.

What was underestimated was the perverted love affair many Iraqis had with their dictator, his sadistically-motivated sons, and Saddam's Royal Guard. This phenomenon brought into question the fundamental wisdom in removing Saddam from power. If I could re-write history, perhaps backing Saddam against Iran would have been a wiser play? Who knows?

Anyway the war is on. One has to deal with the situation that exists -- the task is to prevail. IMHO pulling out is not an acceptable military option.
